SC Freiburg signs Passau defensive talent Emma Memminger

SC Freiburg strengthens its defense with Emma Memminger. The 19-year-old will move from Eintracht Frankfurt to Freiburg for the coming season. The transfer is official; both sides did not provide details about the contract duration.

Memminger comes from Dommelstadl (municipality of Neuburg am Inn, district of Passau) and gained regular playing experience at Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2nd Bundesliga last season: 31 appearances and four goals are on record for the defender. With this, Freiburg signs a young player who has already had to take on responsibility in a performance-oriented environment – and who is also planned as a developmental option for the Bundesliga.

Freiburg relies on flexibility in defense

From a sporting perspective, the move is mainly explained by Memminger's profile: she can be used on both flanks in defense. This dual usability is a valuable lever in squad planning – because it can cushion personnel losses, but also because it allows the sporting management to use various roles throughout the season without having to rebuild the basic structure of the defense each time.

SC department head Birgit Bauer-Schick painted exactly this picture in the club statement. Despite her young age, Memminger is a "confident and composed" player; her ability to play on both defensive flanks would give the team additional options. Freiburg thus describes the transfer less as a short-term fix and more as a targeted reinforcement with perspective – a player who should be competitive immediately, but can also continue to develop in a Bundesliga environment.

Reliable match experience as an argument

31 competitive matches in one season are a clear indication of physical stability, learning curve, and the coach's trust for a 19-year-old – three factors that are particularly important when evaluating full-backs. The fact that Memminger contributed four goals is an additional sign: Freiburg is not only getting a defensive player, but also someone who can make an impact in transition moments and attacking actions. For a team that often wants to generate dynamism on the flanks through runs and crosses, this is more than a side note.

Experience from the DFB youth teams

In addition, there are appearances for the German U15, U17, and U19 national teams. Such stints are not automatically a quality seal for the Bundesliga – but they show that Memminger has been challenged for years in selection structures where tactical training, game tempo, and competitive pressure are above the everyday life of many youth teams. For Freiburg, this fits a pattern: to bring in talents who already know high training and match intensity, and then provide them with a stable environment for further development.

Rapid rise – and the next step

Memminger only moved from 1. FC Passau to Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer of 2024, and now follows with the move to SC Freiburg. The career path is clearly recognizable: from regional football through the 2nd Bundesliga into a Bundesliga setting.

Memminger herself explicitly links the move to her next development step: "I am looking forward to my next steps in professional football and the challenges that come with it. SC Freiburg is a traditional club with a good reputation and has shown me great conditions for my further path. Here I want to develop personally and as a footballer and help the team as best as I can."
